We all know what a huge uproar the recent celebrex and vioxx debates with an increased risk of myocardial infarction have caused, but is all warranted?
Any drug no matter what kind has adverse reactions for some people, this is the medical world we live in today. Merck was in their second clinical trial phase when they were finally able to get scientific proof that their drugs were causing an increase in MI's. They voluntarily removed celebrex and vioxx from the market, yet everyday I see t.v. commercials advertising huge law firms wanting to sue Merck over its drugs. I fail to see where Merck was at all at fault or negligable. It's sometimes difficult to deal with the downsides of such medications but for some people they have no other choice. celebrex and vioxx are in a class of drugs called S-C-2-I's. They are selective cox (cyclogenase) 2 Inhibitors. the cox-2 enzyme is damaging to your stomach lining and such substitute drugs like ibuporfen can cause severe stomach distress giving its users peptic ulcers. This is why celebrex and vioxx may be the only choice for certain people, they can't take other NSAID's (non-sterroidal anti-inflammatories) because of the stomach damage, the damage that celebrex and vioxx do not cause but actually help to repair. Still law firms seem to think they are helping people by sueing large pharmaceuticals. People complain about the drugs we currently have and they demand new and improved breakthrough drugs, yet by them sueing the pharmaceutical companies they are taking money away from research that will bring those new drugs to light. I have e-mailed several of the large law firms filing suit against Merck to find out exactly how they believed that Merck was negligable, but none have responded (big surprise). It's unfortunate for those who did suffer acute MI's from taking celebrex and vioxx, but then again how many would have had the MI's anyway without the drugs? What's done is done, there is no use in sueing the pharmaceutical companies over it, it only impedes other developments, and what about the thousands of people who can now get around much better even with severe arthritis which they never could do before because the NSAID's destroyed their stomach's?
